SHOULD A STUTTERER MARRY?

Published by atreyee under Uncategorized Edit This

It is said that marriages are made in heaven, but as per my opinion a stutterer should be practical and realistic before he takes the leap.

If the person is a minor stutterer he should go ahead with his marriage if he is professionally well off.

But if he has a severe problem he should refrain himself from marriage, no matter whether he does a good job or not.

Marriage brings with it many responsibilities..……

Besides the fear of inheriting the problem to his offspring, there lies the fear of facing dozens of interviews while admitting his child to a school. And if his child fails to get admitted to a good school just because of his/her parent’s speech problem, nothing in the world will make the parent repent more.

Besides, there is a high chance that the spouse and in-laws does not remain patient and cooperative enough and becomes disgusted and irritated with the stutterer and withdraw their support from him.

It is better to remain single than to have a failed marriage.

Other physical problems relating to involutary muscles

Published by atreyee under Uncategorized Edit This

All males face a problem with contraction and relaxation mechanism of their involuntary muscles under tensed, nervous condition………..read the following examples to be more clear
1)  HEART ATTACK IS MORE COMMON IN MALES THAN IN FEMALES
REASON:
Abnormality in the contraction and relaxation mechanism of cardiac muscles, which is an example of involuntary muscle.

2)  ERECTILE DISFUNCTION IS VERY COMMON IN MALES
REASON:
Abnormality in the contraction and relaxation mechanism of penis muscles, which is another example of involuntary muscle.

3)  CONSTIPATION IS MORE COMMON IN MALES THAN IN FEMALES
REASON:
Abnormality in the contraction and relaxation mechanism of intestinal and rectum muscles, which is another example of involuntary muscle.

4)  SIMILARLY STAMMERING IS MORE COMMON IN MALES THAN IN FEMALES
REASON:
Abnormality in the contraction and relaxation mechanism of speech muscles, which is an example of involuntary muscle in stammerers, but is voluntary in fluent speakers.

Reasons of Stammering (Cont….)

Published by atreyee under Uncategorized Edit This

Hi friends,

With reference to my previous post you might ask how come stammerers speak influently while speaking/reading alone or during singing.Read on…..

REGARDING SPEAKING/READING ALONE: Note I have mentioned in my previous post that throat muscle(i.e.muscle surrounding the vocal cord) in stammerers are INVOLUNTARY,not INACTIVE.It is the characteristic of ALL involuntary muscles in the body to behave somewhat awkwardly under stressful condition. For example, our heartbeat increases when we are tensed, frightened, nervous or excited because cardiac muscle is an example of involuntary muscle.Similarly, many people have to visit latrine frequently before an exam/nervous condition because muscles forming alimentary canal and urinary tract are other examples of involuntary muscle. But we don’t face such situation when we are in relaxed & peaceful state of mind.Similarly stammerers can speak better when they are alone/relaxed,but falter under stressful condition as their speech muscles are also involuntary.

REGARDING SINGING: Yes,it is true that even severe stammerers can sing/recite fluently under extreme fear or nervousness. This is because of the rhythm which is generated during singing.A stammerer doesn’t stammer when he/she applies a singing rhythm. This is the only ray of hope!! I have seen that when I speak applying a little bit of singing rhythm even while talking(though sometimes it sounds somewhat stupid),my stammering reduces a lot even under nervous state of mind!!

Reasons of Stammering

Published by atreyee under Uncategorized Edit This

THROAT MUSCLE: The main culprit

According to me, stammering occurs mainly due to irregularity in the contraction & relaxation mechanism of throat muscle(i.e.the muscle surrounding the vocal cord). While a normal person speaks, his throat muscle once contracts, immediately the next moment it relaxes. This alternate contraction & relaxation of the throat muscle enables a person to speak. In normal person this mechanism is carried out at the person’s own will, but in stammerers once the throat muscle contracts it couldn’t be relaxed. This situation further aggravates during excessive tension, fear, nervousness, heated arguments, etc.In other words,in normal people the throat muscle is voluntary, but in stammerers it is involuntary. The problem is more often than not, inborn & is very much hereditary.

The same reason why males stammer more than females:

When a girl dances she looks very nice. But just imagine a macho man dancing with an eastern classical song!!!He would become the greatest joke of the city!!This is because a male’s body muscles are stiff, rigid & inflexible. They don’t possess the flexibity & softness required for dancing, while a girl possess that quality. So leave alone throat muscle,a girl’s entire body muscles are very soft, smooth & flexible. They can easily move their throat muscle while speaking, without any contraction-relaxation problem. So stammering is rarely seen in females.

The widely accepted belief is that stammering automatically cures up with age. But as per my practical experience things are not at all so.
In this blog I would suggest the most effective practical suggestions and techniques to overcome this curse with constant and regular practice of those techniques.
I would like other stammerers and speech therapists to join the blog and share their views.
